All September long, we are sharing the things that we love here on Buzznet. While I'm most noted for sharing my love of music, this week I want to shed some light on other things that mean a lot to me.
Silence is very important. They say it's golden, and I wholeheartedly agree. Sometimes, I just want to turn everything off: the music, TV, smartphones, computers, and my brain even. Everything. Sometimes we just need to regain our composure and our strength. While music can help us achieve that too, I find that being quiet is more effective.
There is so much noise going on around us. We live in a culture where pressure to be like everyone else is suffocating our youth. We have the smartphone epidemic where people are taking photos of themselves 24/7 and posting them to social media while documenting their every move. We have television shows and commercials that sometimes make us feel inadequate. I'm realizing as I get older that social media is a hate machine. No matter how much some of us use it for good, there will always be people that use it to hide behind their attacks. Don't you just want to shut it all off sometimes? Relax in your bedroom and just regroup? I know I do.
I live in a city of noise. New York City is constantly abuzz with some type of noise. I don't mind it most of the time. When I'm lying in bed in the morning and I hear the sounds of the city, it's reassuring that there is life out there and that's comforting. It's also nice to wake up to the birds chirping. It's a happy medium of sound in Brooklyn, but sometimes it's nice to just enjoy the silence.
Too many times we are afraid of our inner voice. We are afraid of what it might tell us about ourselves but I've found that if we give the silence a chance, we can sort out those negative thoughts and turn them into positives. Revel in your quiet time. Relax. Pray. Cry. Meditate. Do whatever it is that you feel you need to do in order to make it through to the other side.
After years of being miserable, I finally mastered the art of forgiving myself and letting myself heal through silence and prayer. We need to find peace, otherwise we are walking with negativity that can ruin our passion and creativity.
This week, try to fall in love with the silence. You just might surprise yourself at how much better you feel.
